Ceramic restorations

Ceramic Inlays / Onlays

An inlay is an indirect filling which is consisting of a solid substance such as gold, ceramic, porcelain or heat cured composite resins. They fit in the cavity preparation in a tooth and cemented into place. An onlay is the same as an inlay, except that it extends to replace cusps of the coronal portion of a posterior tooth.

Current ceramic systems provide outstanding esthetics and sufficient strength to be considered for many posterior applications. It has great durability and biocompatibility; better wear resistance, color control and stability (compared to resin), and thermal conductivity similar to tooth structure.

The indirect composite resins are cured outside the mouth, in a processing unit that is capable of delivering higher intensities and levels of energy than handheld lights can. Indirect composites can have higher fillers levels, are cured for longer times and curing shrinkage can be handled in a better way. As a result, they are less prone to shrinkage stress and marginal gaps.

The main indications for all-ceramic inlays/onlays over composite restorations are situations where esthetics is the primary concern , the decay involve more than one-third of the occlusal surface of posterior teeth and one or more cusps of occlusal surface need to be replaced or should have cuspal coverage.
